Intercultural dialogue

A Swiss-international co-production
Transmedial composition as multicultural project

As shown by the global events and political developments of recent times, intercultural dialogue is indispensable. In this connection, one of the aims of Swiss composer and conductor Robert Bachmann is to initiate and uphold an intercultural dialogue on different views and standpoints, thus opening up the rich variety of creation for the benefit of all. This is a matter of discussing critically and self-critically with each other - while taking differences into account. And that is exactly what lies behind the multinational culture project ULURU.

Initiated as a transmedial composition in 1992 at the Zermatt Symposium for Creativity, ULURU has developed since then in diverse forms and directions as an intercultural "work in progress". This DVD incorporates all the video and audio versions of the work so far recorded.

A substantial part of this comprehensive DVD is devoted to the ULURU "Fractal Symphony" premiere at the Budapest Whitsun Festival on May 19, 1997 with the Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra (Budapest Symphony Orchestra) conducted by the composer. Thanks to the outstanding talent and commitment of several hundred Hungarian instrumentalists and singers - in particular the Komitat Nograd youth choirs - this event in the concert hall of the Franz Liszt Music Academy was a resounding success. The fruitful cooperation with Hungarian and Aboriginal artists was indeed a key success factor in the overall concept of this DVD production.

The artistic concept of this ULURU DVD incorporates virtual reference possibility to other visual and acoustic realms of the composition at any time during the Budapest premiere. It is thus possible to travel virtually outside the Budapest concert hall, and experience the fascinating "dreamtime" of the Australian Aborigines or drop in on the studio recording sessions in London.

As an outstanding example of international intercultural dialogue, Robert Bachmann's ULURU is one of the most intricate multimedia DVD productions to appear. It is a composition which strikingly pays tribute to the rich intercultural variety of life. ULURU has been created as a joint production by partners and collaborators in Australia, the USA, Russia, Great Britain, Germany, Austria, Hungary and Switzerland.

ULURU is music revealing the true depths of our senses.
